How To Take Care of Ranch Animals

The success of your ranch depends on you raising healthy animals that draw a good price at market. Not only do you need to care for the animals you plan to sell, but you also need to pay attention to your breeding stock. Caring for livestock is similar to caring for domestic pets in that you need to do these three things.

Provide Medical Care

Even animals that spend most of their time on the range get hurt or sick and need medical attention sometimes. You need to have a vet on standby that specializes in livestock care. If you are worried that you may not have the funds to pay for vet care when your animals need it, you may want to consider investing in equine and livestock insurance.

Give High-Quality Feed

Your animals may get enough food by grazing all day in your fields, but if you want your livestock to get adequate nutrition, you may want to supplement with some high-quality grain. Do some research to see which grain is most nutrient-dense while still being cost-efficient so you can find something that works for your animals without breaking the bank.

Build a Shelter

Your herd may be too large to house in a barn, but your animals deserve to have some type of shelter from inclement weather. A barn can be a great place for treating animals that are hurt or injured, but you can also erect a lean-to if you are trying to save money.

Caring for livestock is often easier than caring for pets because ranch animals require less supervision, but if you want to make sure your herd stays healthy, you need to make sure you are caring for the animals properly. Using these three tips will help your herd stay happy and thriving so they can turn a good profit.
